2019 Southborough Trails Scout Projects

Build Map Kiosk & Parking Area at Route 30 / Old Northboro Road

Eagle Scout: Zane Walter, Troop 1
Project Completion Date: October 2019

Zane Walter built a map kiosk (using Eric Hanson's design) and installed a parking area at the corner of Route 30 and Old Northboro Road. The kiosks displays maps and historical information for Chestnut Hill Farm, Beals Preserve and the Sudbury Reservoir (SRT), Boroughs Loop (BLT), and the Aqueduct Trail (3 trails in 1). This is a perfect location to highlight three wonderful hiking spots in town.

The Committee appreciates all of Zane's great work on this project, Troop 1 and its leadership, The Trustees, Southborough Open Land Foundation, Recreation Department, the Board of Selectman, the Building Department and all other departments, volunteers, family, friends, and community members who contributed to this project.

Guided Hike Number 1 - Boroughs Loop Trail / Bay Circuit Trail

Led By: Bill Fadden, Regional Representative of the Bay Circuit Alliance

The hike was be led by Bill Fadden on a section of the Bay Circuit Trail off Route 30. The hike followed the beautiful Stony Brook, continuing into the woods toward the Fayville Dam, and then followed a peaceful stretch of trail adjacent to the Sudbury Reservoir. Bill shared his wealth of knowledge about the history of the land and the Bay Circuit Trail. This was a very successful hike with 29 participants. The first half-mile of this trail is currently closed and is scheduled for reconstruction in late 2020.

Guided Hike Number 2 - Boroughs Loop Trail "Sneak Peek"

Led By: Andy Leahy, Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Ranger
Date: October 26, 2019

The hike was be led by DCR Ranger, Andy Leahy, on a future section of the Boroughs Loop Trail that is not yet open to the public. This was a "sneak peek" hike on a soon-to-be trail in town. The trail overlaps an existing access path, has a hard-packed surface, and a wide corridor. The roundtrip hike was roughly 3 miles. Andy shared very interesting facts and pictures about the history of the property. This was a well attended hike with 41 registrants and roughly 35 participants.
