2018 Southborough Trails Scout Projects

Historical Markers and Trail Enhancements on Sudbury Reservoir Trail off Deerfoot Road
Eagle Scout: Alex Flynn, Troop 92
Project Completion Date: July 2018
Historical MarkerAlex Flynn and Al Bezanson

The historical marker project is the first of its kind in Southborough. The project improved a section of the Sudbury Reservoir Trail (SRT) by widening the trail corridor and making the trail more inviting and accessible to the community. The historical markers will help to inform the community about important Southborough history for years to come. A stone bench was also placed at a clearing overlooking the Burnett House. The bench was dedicated to a loyal project supporter and long-time trail steward, Allan Bezanson.

Many thanks to Alex, Troop 92 and its leadership, the Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR), Recreation Department, DPW, Historical Commission, Historical Society, Conservation Commission, Jim Hegarty, Allan Bezanson, Deborah Costine, Home Depot, Alltype Signs, Jon and Jennifer Delli Priscoli, Louis Monti & Sons, and all other departments, volunteers, family, friends, and community members who contributed to this project.

Sudbury Reservoir Trail Improvements near Open Channel off Ward Road
Eagle Scout: Mitchell Hills, Troop 1
Project Completion Date: January 2018
Mitchell Hills Post/Marker ProjectMitchell Hills Post, Markers, Enhancements Project

This project involved marking the Sudbury Reservoir Trail (SRT) along the open channel with blazes, installing wooden posts with blazes, removing tree debris, and widening the cooridor in sections of the trail near Walnut Hill (Sawink Farm Reservation Park).

Before this project, the section of the trail needed additional markings. It was difficult to know where the trail changed sides on the open channel and what sections of the trail were off limits to trail walkers.  The posts and trail markers radically improved navigation. And, clearing tree debris and widening the cooridor on the wooded sections of the trail provided much needed enchancments.

Many thanks to Mitchell, Troop 1 and its leadership, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), the Recreation Department, and all other departments, volunteers, family, friends, and community members who contributed to this project.

2017 Southborough Trails Scout Projects

Sudbury Reservoir Trail Bridge Replacement near Fay School
Eagle Scout: Nathan Hall, Troop 92
Project Completion Date: December 2017Footbridge Fay School

This project involved building an ADA compliant footbridge over a seasonal waterway on the Sudbury Reservoir Trail near the Fay School athletic field. It also included cleaning out the debris from the old bridge and immediate trail area.

Before the new footbridge was built, it was very difficult to cross this waterway and the previous structures was not very attractive. The footbridge, similar to a design used by DCR at the Quabbin, involved installing cement footings on each bank and building the decking and railings.  The bridge is not only beautiful, but it also provides a safe crossing for all trail walkers. The footbridge is a considerable improvement to this section of the trail.

Many thanks to Nathan, Troop 92 and its leadership, Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR), the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Recreation Department, Conservation Commission, and all other departments, volunteers, family, friends, and community members who contributed to this project.

Girl Scout Silver Award Project: Shannon Provencal  and Kathryn Gowdy, Troop 85160
Project Completion Date: September 2017

This project involved mapping the trails in Southborough using the AllTrails App, marking the Sudbury Reservoir Trail (SRT), trash and brush clean up on the trails, making and installing trail map boxes along the SRT, and placing five geocaches around town. In addition, Shannon and Kathryn coorSOLF Awarddinated and hosted a Hike Southborough Trails Day on September 23, 2017 at Chestnut Hill Farm. As part of the event, they scheduled guided hikes for families to participate in at Beals Preserve, Chestnut Hill Farm, Breakneck Hill Conservation Land, and the Sudbury Reservoir Trail led by local community members. They also included a kid's scavenger hunt and brought in an expert in wildlife tracking, Paul Wanta, to lead one of the hikes.

This project was full of useful trail enhancements and provided a wonderful event for the community while promoting the trails. It improved trail navigation through the use of technology, map boxes, and more trail markers. The event had a great turn outHike Southborough Day Kickoff!

Sudbury Reservoir Trail Cross-country Marked MileStart Measured Mile Marker on SRT
Eagle Scout: Matt Bai, Troop 1
Project Completion Date: 2015

This project involved installing measured mile markers every quarter mile for the cross-country team along the Sudbury Reservoir Trail (SRT) between Deerfoot Rd. and Route 30.
